Nahan is a perfect romantic getaway.It is situated on top in the Shiwalik Hills, overlooking green hills.
Nahan has its past spun around many tales and legends. Founded by Raja Karan Prakash in 1621 as a capital, it is believed that this town derives its name from a sage named Nahar who lived at the same site where this town stands today. As per another version, the town gets its name from an incident where the king who was trying to kill a lion was stopped by a saint named Baba Banwari Das who said Nahar meaning ‘don’t kill’. Paonta is located on the banks of Yamuna river it is associated with Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru who lived here for about three years. In the closing years of the seventeenth century, the Sikh Guru came to the princely state of Sirmaur on the invitation of its ruler Maidni Prakash. After surveying the area he decided to camp by the river Yamuna and his stay here became the foundation for the town of Paonta Sahib.
Sirmaur is the southern most district in the Himachal Pradesh, It is largely mountainous and rural, with 90% of its population living in villages. it has beautiful landscapes, bracing climate, big and small game and legendry temples which hold abiding attraction for the tourists. In this District, there are five Administrative Sub Divisions, Nine tehsils, Four sub tehsils, six community development blocks, two municipal committees and one notified area committee. Out of total 228 panchayats in this district, 26 are backward declared panchayats.
The river Giri is the biggest river in the district which originates from Kotkhai/Jubbal Tehsil of Shimla district and flows down in the south-east direction. It ultimately joins the river Yamuna near Paonta Sahib. The river Giri is very useful as it a big source of livelihood fishermen in this district.
