Chandigarh, also called the City Beautiful, because of its many parks and gardens, is a popular destination for tourists, and forms the gateway to Himachal Pradesh. While the wetland area around Sukhna Lake is sought after by both aquatic sports lovers and migratory birds, it is Nek Chand’s Rock Garden that remains the top draw of Chandigarh. Peopled by figures of birds, animals, men, and women, and dotted with waterfalls, tunnels, and canyons, it has been created entirely out of industrial waste.
The Leisure Valley, nurtured along an 8 km long rivulet, runs down the city’s length and is divided into a number of smaller parks including Asia’s largest Rose Garden. Just across from the garden are the Government Museum and Art Gallery, a lovingly maintained treasure trove, which includes a large share from the Lahore Museum. The Capitol Complex houses within it the Secretariat, the Assembly Hall and the High Court alongside the Open Hand, a sculptured symbol of Chandigarh’s aspirations.
