Known as the very essence of Punjab, Gobindgarh Fort Amritsar is one of the most important historical places of the state. Spread across an area of 43 acres, the Gobindgarh Fort was initially built by Gujar Singh, and its final construction was completed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The fort was built to protect Amritsar from any invasion and hence, it was known as the ‘Guardian of the holy city of Amritsar’.
Gobindgarh Fort history dates back to the year 1760 when its construction was initiated. The 258-year fort was first in the possession of the Misl Clan, and later it was captured by the mighty ruler of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in the year 1809. He renamed the fort to ‘Gobindgarh,’ after the name of Shri Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru. Finally, the fort was annexed by the British after the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849.
